Eric's Khan Academy 8th Grade US Government

Kyle completed Khan Academy's "US Government and Civics unit which, matched the Massachusetts requirements for 8th grade. He needed to get at least 80% on the unit tests and quizzes (78-80% on the higher numbered quizzes). We added coverage of Massachusetts state and local government using wikipedia, mass.gov, malegislature.gov, our town website, and attendance at a town election and a town meeting.   Compare/Contrast The books that I will be comparing and contrasting are ‘Five Smooth Stones’ by Kristiana Gregory and ‘The Sign Of The Beaver’ by Elizabeth George Speare. The first book, ‘Five Smooth Stones’, is about Hope, a girl that is about ten years old and lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She lives with her mother, brother, and later in the book, her little sister Strawberry. The time that the book is set in is 1776-1777 at the revolutionary war. The perspective is a first person view of the events that are happening at the time.  The other book that I read is ‘The Sign Of The Beaver’ whose main character is Matt, a 12-13 year old boy who made his cabin from scratch with his father. The year in which this book is set is approximately the year of 1770. His father went away for 3 months to go fetch the rest of his family. The place in which it is set is the Maine frontier.   How to Mitigate the Impact of Human Population Growth Our increasing population requires more resources to sustain, and our ways of collecting those resources are harmful to the environment. We consume those resources inefficiently and our waste products damage ecosystems. Some people say this catastrophic damage is inevitable, but we can mitigate the impact of human population growth with our activities and technologies.  We can use clean/green energy generation (wind turbines, nuclear fission, hydroelectric dams, solar arrays) to reduce carbon pollution from more harmful energy generation technologies. These would replace the three harmful power generation technologies, oil, coal, and gas power plants, which get their resources through drilling, mining, and fracking respectively. building a filter

 This week we took items from our kitchen that could be used as a kind of filter. We got water from the concord river to put through the filter. First we used cheese cloths, witch got out most of the grime. Then we used one layer of floursack towel to filter some more dirt out. The floursack towel did well. After all that, the water looked pretty clear, but still a bit brown. Then we used four layers of floursack towel that got everything out except for microscopic organisms and dirt particles.                           These are the slides that we made to look at under a microscope
