Year End Review, School Year 2021-2022

We completed the required 180 days of schooling in the second week of June for Eric and second week of May for Kyle, since we started in August and only took Thanksgiving and Christmas-NewYear off. The kids enjoyed the flexibility of homeschooling and being able to choose some of their project topics.

Eric and Kyle presented their collaborative Energy Transfer project via Zoom to their grandparents and uncles. The video recording is available on request. Here's a screen-capture of Eric presenting, with Kyle standing by:


We worked on typing periodically throughout the year and near the end of the year they transcribed a full page in one session to demonstrate stamina and proficiency.


All three of us used Duolingo to learn a language. Kyle learned Spanish at the beginner level and dabbled in Japanese. Eric started with Spanish but soon flipped over to Latin. They used their Spanish to write letters to kids in the Dominican Republic that we sponsor.


As a Media Arts project to cap off the year, Eric and Kyle put together slideshows of pictures taken during our vacation in May.

  Compare/Contrast The books that I will be comparing and contrasting are ‘Five Smooth Stones’ by Kristiana Gregory and ‘The Sign Of The Beaver’ by Elizabeth George Speare. The first book, ‘Five Smooth Stones’, is about Hope, a girl that is about ten years old and lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She lives with her mother, brother, and later in the book, her little sister Strawberry. The time that the book is set in is 1776-1777 at the revolutionary war. The perspective is a first person view of the events that are happening at the time.  The other book that I read is ‘The Sign Of The Beaver’ whose main character is Matt, a 12-13 year old boy who made his cabin from scratch with his father.   How to Mitigate the Impact of Human Population Growth Our increasing population requires more resources to sustain, and our ways of collecting those resources are harmful to the environment. We consume those resources inefficiently and our waste products damage ecosystems. Some people say this catastrophic damage is inevitable, but we can mitigate the impact of human population growth with our activities and technologies.  We can use clean/green energy generation (wind turbines, nuclear fission, hydroelectric dams, solar arrays) to reduce carbon pollution from more harmful energy generation technologies. These would replace the three harmful power generation technologies, oil, coal, and gas power plants, which get their resources through drilling, mining, and fracking respectively. building a filter

 This week we took items from our kitchen that could be used as a kind of filter. We got water from the concord river to put through the filter. First we used cheese cloths, witch got out most of the grime. Then we used one layer of floursack towel to filter some more dirt out. The floursack towel did well. After all that, the water looked pretty clear, but still a bit brown. Then we used four layers of floursack towel that got everything out except for microscopic organisms and dirt particles.                           These are the slides that we made to look at under a microscope
